Wildlife Rehabilitators in the Hudson Valley

General: 

 If you find a baby animal that is unharmed, do not touch or move it.  Generally the parents are nearby and will return when you are gone.  Animal parents need to hunt, forage and graze and often do not take their young with them.  This is particularly true of fledgling birds.  Baby birds actually spend more time in the care of their parents out of the nest than in it.  LEAVE THEM BE.

If you find an adult or baby animal that is injured, be aware that most other animals view you as a predator and will fight you and possibly injure you if you attempt to move them.  Also you may injure them further.  Leave them where they are, take a picture, and text it to a rehabber with the exact location and a couple sentences about your concern.  If they are on a road, consider directing traffic around them, or calling the police to do so.

There are licensed wildlife rehabilitators who have gone through a two-year process with the DEC, and there are people who rehabilitate animals as a hobby without licensing.  The second group may be particularly important when there is no licensed rehabber in our area for the particular species you have encountered.
